N‐Substituted Acridinium as a Multi‐Responsive Recognition Unit in Supramolecular Chemistry

The N-substituted acridinium motif is an electron-deficient unit with appealing multi-responsive properties which have been exploited in the field of supramolecular chemistry. This building block reversibly alters its shape, and chemical optical response to a or redox signal. In this Review, we discuss selected examples where switchable 9-aryl-N-methyl-acridinium lead actuators, multi-input multi-output systems, host guest interlocked systems controllable motion.

A redox-responsive quadruple hydrogen-bonding module (eDAN) has been developed. The strong binding between the reduced form and its partner (DeUG) can be significantly decreased upon oxidation but restored upon subsequent reduction.
